Hope Blooms in Connection

A reflection on May Mental Health Awareness Month from Melissa Raines, LMHCA

Spring is a wonderful time to take inventory of life areas that need recalibrating. The emerging blooms remind us that after a harsh winter, there is hope on the horizon. The past two seasons in Western North Carolina have been ripe with challenges, and many folks are wondering where and how to act. May Mental Health Awareness Month invites us to reflect on the theme of “turning awareness into action”. Whether it’s a personal shift or a community cause, wisdom about our next steps may be found in our values and connections.

Values shape the internal compass that guides our actions. They inform our passions and how we prioritize our time. Regardless of outcomes or hardships, in every moment we can choose actions that are in alignment with our authentic selves. When you’re wondering where to focus your efforts, curiosity about your values can provide direction.

Additionally, connection is our most precious resource in all seasons. Whether it’s a trusted friend, spiritual community, or a therapeutic relationship, we need to know that we are witnessed and held. When life is overwhelming, relationships can help you find your center.

This May we are reminded that every aligned action is meaningful-no matter how small-and that it’s never too late to pivot or reach out for support!
